The gym is empty
at 5:47 AM.
That's the point.
Before the bleachers fill and the scoreboard lights up, something else happens here. An unnamed freshman rolls a ball cart through the double doors. The lights buzz on. Nobody is watching.
Hardwood isn't built in games. It's built in the hours before the games exist — in the footwork drills nobody posts, the film sessions that run past dinner, the hundred free throws after practice ends.

I came in as a skinny kid who couldn't read a defense. Two years later I'm starting varsity and reading the game two possessions ahead. That's coaching.
